Radiant comfort without a heated slab.

 

Radiant Ceilings

 

Radiant ceilings are the most undervalued radiant heating application
available today. We often use them in new construction to supplement
inadequate warm air systems and areas with a large percentage of
windows. We even used them on a new SIP home in Golden Valley to
overcome limiting factors presented by floor coverings.

 

In retrofit situations we use radiant ceilings in kitchens, either as
the exclusive source of heat or to supplement a marginal radiant floor
falling short of the heat loads due to limited floor space, e.g. large
island, cabinets etc. It usually costs less to lower a ceiling by ¾”
than to lower a floor or raise doors to get heat where you need it.

 

Radiant ceilings are low-mass heat emitters meaning they respond
quickly to changes in room conditions. If you have solar gain the
ceiling will cool off quickly and when the sun goes down they are just
as responsive to dropping temperatures, making them the perfect match
for rooms with a large window.

 

Naturally, weather sensitive control of the delivered water
temperature is crucial, which brings up another advantage that radiant
ceilings and walls have over all other radiant panels; low temperature
performance. In most modern construction the radiant ceiling panel
will satisfy the heating demands with delivered water temperatures
below 120°F. Perfect for condensing boilers, water heaters and heat
pumps.

 

Since ceiling are normally free of any obstruction, save an occasional
light fixture or three, they present the perfect view for the sun-like
radiant waves emitted from the ceiling to all surfaces direct and
indirect below. The typical mid-winter ceiling temperature here in
Minnesota will range from 70-90°F and the floors below around 70°F.
This is not radiant floor temperature 72-86°F but higher than the
typical 66°F found in most forced air heated homes.

 

Radiant ceilings do not make your head hot. You are thinking of “high
intensity” radiant tube heaters or infrareds, as one might see in the
local car wash. Even these would be more comfortable if we designed
and installed them as we often do in shops like the one listed below.
If the floor is poured we look to the heavens for guidance, or at
least the ceiling, before giving up perfect comfort.
